The Project

Indigenous communities deserve digital tools that reflect their values, governance structures, and ways of organising.

The Indigenous DAO Toolkit is a kaupapa led by Mātou Collective. It’s designed to bridge the gap between decentralised technology and Indigenous self-governance—supporting collective identity, polycentric coordination, and culturally aligned digital infrastructure.

We’re building tools that empower Indigenous communities to define, express, and govern on their own terms.

Organisations

“We endorse the Indigenous DAO Toolkit because we believe it offers essential modern tools to support our clan in facilitating and managing collective decision-making across hundreds of extended family members spanning six family lines. Our family trust has been established to manage traditional land rights and initiate development projects that ensure a prosperous future for all our descendants.

We hope that the Indigenous DAO Toolkit will provide us with the technology to support transparent governance, enable fair participation, and uphold the values of collective responsibility and intergenerational equity. By integrating cultural principles with innovative digital infrastructure, we believe this toolkit can empower our people to make decisions that honour our heritage while embracing the future.”

“Te Manawa o Cambridge Trust is proud to endorse the Indigenous DAO Toolkit proposal led by Mātou Collective.

As a community hub committed to supporting whānau, hapori, and kaupapa Māori in the Cambridge area, we see first-hand the need for digital tools that align with Māori ways of working, decision-making, and collective care. Our communities are rich in knowledge and tikanga, but often underserved when it comes to digital infrastructure that reflects and supports who we are.

This kaupapa has the potential to shift that. By building tools that are grounded in Māori values and developed in partnership with our people, the Indigenous DAO Toolkit can help unlock new possibilities for governance, collaboration, and connection — both locally and across Aotearoa.

We believe this project will be a powerful step toward digital equity and tino rangatiratanga in the technology space. Te Manawa o Cambridge Trust stands in full support of this proposal and looks forward to seeing its impact in action.”

“Karokaro A2B2 Trust supports the Indigenous DAO Toolkit proposal by Mātou Collective.

As a Māori whenua trust responsible for the care and governance of ancestral land passed down through generations, we face challenges familiar to many — including fragmented shares, increasing numbers of owners, and governance systems that no longer serve our whānau well. We see this toolkit as a timely and necessary step toward solutions that are built with Indigenous realities at the centre.

The Indigenous DAO Toolkit offers a decentralised, culturally grounded approach to digital infrastructure that supports collective decision-making, trust operations, and whānau engagement. Importantly, it upholds the principle of data sovereignty — ensuring that our information, identities, and tikanga remain under our control.

This kaupapa aligns with the values of our trust and whānau — whakawhanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and tino rangatiratanga — and supports our efforts to govern in ways that are both modern and deeply rooted in who we are.

Karokaro A2B2 Trust fully endorses this proposal and the leadership of Mātou Collective. We believe it will strengthen our capacity to govern well, protect our whenua, and empower future generations to stay connected and involved.“

I want to see this DAO work and become successful enough that we can create a new normal of public relationships, one where groups are based in sovereignty. My mind

Why Your Endorsement Matters

Decentralised tech is moving fast—but most tools aren’t designed for Indigenous realities. They prioritise individual ownership and market logic. Indigenous governance is relational, collective, and intergenerational.

Your endorsement strengthens the case for digital tools that:

  • Honour Indigenous governance structures
  • Reduce technical barriers through accessible onboarding and protocols
  • Align decentralised tech with Indigenous values
  • Bring real-world use cases to ecosystems like Cardano
  • Serve as templates for any community seeking collective, decentralised governance

Who We're Building With

  • Indigenous nations and hapū
  • Marae, land trusts, and whānau collectives
  • Decentralised builders and developers
  • Cardano ecosystem leaders
  • Anyone reimagining governance for people and planet
